Twenty Weeks

a.k.a. five months, halfway (?!?) through.  EEK!

I write this update sitting on the couch in Bermuda, where we've spent the last five days with Preston's (incredibly generous) family.  I have slept a criminal(ly awesome) amount, worn jeans every day, eaten a kind of scary amount of chocolate, drunk a lot of tea, worked on my thesis, played a lot of cards, almost finished my book, and spent a lot of time being chauffeured around the island on the back of Preston's moped.  It's been restorative and relaxing and the perfect tonic to the crazed month that was December.  I'll post some pictures in the coming days, but for now, an update as to the newest member of our family (who is making his/her/its presence ever more known)!

How Big is the Baby? About 10.5 oz and as long as a banana (this is what he/she/it looks like inside of me).

Total Weight Gain: In sum, I have come to realize (and accept very begrudgingly) that I am not one of those pregnant people who gains only in the belly.  OH NO.  My weight has been evenly distributed over my entire body (though there has been a particular emphasis on my upper arms, which now weigh more than my head, and my boobs, which are, I have no doubt, on the precipice of world domination).  I'm looking more and more like a Troll doll with each passing day.  Lovely.

Belly Update: On the plus side, I'm finally looking pregnant as opposed to "has she just had too many cookies?"  On the down side, OH MY GOSH I can't believe I'm only going to get bigger.

Stretch Marks?   LALALALALALALA.

Maternity Clothes?  The shirt above is a maternity shirt (I bought about four like it before our trip to Bermuda, and am so glad that I did), but honestly I don't like wearing them (or other maternity shirts/sweaters) because they are so long that they actually make me look shorter.  That said, they are comfortable.  I still haven't bought maternity pants, but will buy some once we get home.  This Bella-Band-and-jeans-rubberbanded-shut routine is getting old.  Also, it takes forever for me to get everything off in order to go to the bathroom thirty-eight times a day.

Movement?  Yes!  I felt my first distinctive movement very early on Wednesday December 22, and have felt occasional flutters since then.  I can tell when it's moving even when I don't have my hand on my stomach, which is neat.  It really just feels like my stomach growling (or, as many websites describe it, like popcorn popping inside of me - bizarre).  Last night Preston felt a gentle kick, which was really neat.

Food Cravings?  No cravings specifically, this week, but man.  I have eaten a LOT.  My in-laws are very "meat and potatoes" eaters (which I am definitely not), and in addition to that sort of diet for every meal (every day), I've eaten a bowl of ice cream after dinner that night.  Two hours later, I'm ready for another snack.  Over the last week, these have varied from healthy (plain yogurt with a sliced banana) to not-at-all healthy (three chocolate truffles eaten in rapid succession).  Basically, I'm ready to get back to my food in my fridge where I can eat whatever I want (specifically: Kefir, grapefruits, hot chocolate, everything bagels with cream cheese and tomatoes, Greek yogurt, sliced almonds, VEGETABLES that are not peas, rice cakes, string cheese, lettuce, oh my goodness, I could go on, but I will spare you).

What I Miss: My waist, having endurance, being slim (or at least feeling slim).  Also, for the first time: BEER.  Delicious, delicious beer.  Maybe it's because we're on vacation, maybe it's because I'm tired of water, maybe it's because I'm jealous of Preston, I don't know.  All I know is that I would kill for a delicious dark beer right now.  Sigh.

Milestones: Movement!  Felt by both Preston and me!  We find out the sex on Monday, and are both really excited.  And by really excited I mean SUPER DEE DOOPER WE CANNOT WAIT excited.

Oh, and THIS: You know what you should not forget when you go on vacation while five months pregnant?  A BRA.  I wore a sports bra on the flight simply because it was more comfortable (and because we were leaving far before the crack of dawn), and then as I started to unpack in Bermuda and couldn't find a real bra ANYWHERE realized that I had completely forgotten to pack a bra (Preston and I had condensed our bags at the last minute to avoid paying $35 extra - we already paid $25 for one bag...arg).  Luckily I had two sports bras with me, so I've been ok, other than the fact that I've looked a bit like I have two very large pancakes sitting on my chest all week.  AWESOME.
