I was asleep when he got back that night, and I remember waking up groggily to our front door closing. Suddenly, Preston was standing beside the bed, an enormous box in his arms. "You won it?" I said with surprise. "I won it," Preston said with a smile.
You guys. We do not win things. I have entered my name into the $25 raffle at Trader Joe's nearly every week for the last two years (you can enter whenever you bring your own bags), and guess how many times I have won? ZERO. Preston and I don't enter contests or giveaways often, but when we do, um, we are pretty consistent losers. So. To win a TV was pretty exciting.
That said, we did not need a TV even a little bit. We have a TV in our den and since we live in an apartment, the den is never more than a couple of rooms away. Not to mention that we really don't need to be watching any more TV. I wouldn't call us TV junkies (though both of us have our favorite shows), but we do watch a fair amount of TV on DVD - a random episode here or there (or a marathon weekend every now and then...especially when you have homework to do...).
Preston had thrown out the idea of a TV in the bedroom before, but I had always been reluctant - I read enough Real Simple to know that plenty of studies show that people sleep better when their rooms are as free of stimuli as possible. So no. I did not want a TV in the bedroom. I wanted to preserve the room as one in which we slept, and only slept. I wanted to maintain the room's function as one of rest and repose - one where I could simply relax. Plus we never had an extra TV, so it was never an issue.

Except that, as of last Monday, we did have an extra TV, and the only logical place to put it was in the bedroom (seriously - our other options were dining room, bathroom, or kitchen). And, um, as it turns out, I completely love it. When Preston was out of town last week, I was able to sit in bed and finish up some emails with the third season of The Big Bang Theory on in the background. Right now Preston and I are watching Glee in the bedroom and I'm typing up this blog post. And, as Preston pointed out this afternoon, our bed is the nicest piece of furniture we own, so it makes sense to spend as much time as possible on it, right? RIGHT.

Yes, I am still a little concerned that we will now spend all of our time in the bedroom, and yes, I do feel kind of/really lazy for typing this blog post from the bed, but honestly - more than anything - I'm kind of loving this new level of lazy. Because in the midst of a semester that's already kicking my ass (is it really only September?!? BOO HISS), to be able to come home, get into my pajamas, and know that it doesn't matter if I fall asleep during Gossip Girl because I AM ALREADY IN BED...well, what can I say? I'm taking my small victories where I can find them.

I have gone back and forth about wanting a TV in the bedroom, but the fact that I have saved the *perfect* wall space for a small flatscreen probably tells you what my true feelings are ;)
ReplyDeleteGO YOU! Enjoy the relaxation!
You will never want to go back! Bed+TV+Laptop+Dog...there's nothing missing!!
ReplyDeleteI AM SO JEALOUS (don't let Massey catch me saying that, though!)! I, too, am VERY anti TV in the bedroom, but part of me (aka every time we stay at his parents' beach house or a hotel) CRAVES that level of...comfort.
ReplyDeleteWe're a micro-mini TV family, but we have a SECOND TV on our wish list for our future family room. That, and after we FINALLY get INTERNET AT OUR HOUSE (aka I pop out this baby and threaten mutiny if I am left at home WITHOUT internet)I can only imagine the bliss of laying in bed with a sleeping baby typing away and watching TV.
Clearly this has elicited strong feelings. Again--don't tell Massey!
I come from a huge television family. I live with my sister and we have four televisions for two people.
ReplyDeleteTVs are always a good thing....in any room!
ohhh we are saving to buy a new tv and I sooo miss having one in the bedroom. I loved having one in there when i was single, but then when I got married, I was of the Real Simple mind frame too...but oh those overnight shifts make me wish we had one in the bedroom now! plus, who can argue against snuggling up in bed watching a movie?!
