Dear Future Self,

Tonight you went on a date with your husband. Your present self can't actually remember the last time you did that. This is embarrassing. Also probably not very healthy for ye olde marriage.

The point is, sometimes it's good just to get out. I know that you love being home, and that especially when Baby B is born you'll want to be home even more, but future self, I am begging you to remember how fun tonight was. You and Preston went out to a movie (The King's Speech, which was excellent) and out to dinner with a gift certificate. A pretty standard date night, and less than four hours from start to finish, but so, so worth it.

Because it was just you two.  No dogs to be walked, no emails to be answered, and no papers to be filed.  Just you two. And yes, when Baby B comes your priorities will change and your world will turn upside down and you will be tired and stressed and cranky and confused and so in love with your daughter that I'm afraid you might forget to take care of your marriage. And I don't want that to happen. Because without this marriage you wouldn't have a home or these puppies or a daughter or this life that you love - none of this would exist if you two hadn't come together eight years ago in what was, for lack of a better description, a holy explosion of AWKWARD.

So take time for yourself, yes (YES), but also take time for Preston, for this partnership. Because it's a pretty great one. OK. Enough lecturing. I promise.

Love,
Your Present Self

p.s. Ok I lied. Just a smidgen more lecturing: PLEASE make sure you take showers after the baby comes. I just worry that you won't, and, um, that you will look and smell like a Harpy all summer. So please - even if it's only for five minutes - take the time to CLEAN your person. The general public will thank you. As will Preston.

p.p.s. This is what you looked like on Date Night tonight! 22 weeks and 3 days WHAT?!?

  1. Hooray for dates! Also, what did you do with the baby? Also, does this mean that the baby's first name begins with "B?"

  3. Hahahahaha. You're funny. And totally smart to remind your future self.

Also, I'd like to know where you're hiding that sweet baby. You look too fabulous for words, MF! And I mean that in an envious way...not in an "I have no filters and I'm a stranger" way.

For perspective, I can no longer see my feet. That is all.

  5. My husband and I also went on a "King's Speech"-and-dinner date this weekend. And it was an incredible movie--I laughed so much. Glad you enjoyed your date!
