However, lately, it had gotten ridiculous. I was wearing my hair in a ponytail every day because just the thought of having to deallllllllllllll with all the hairrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr was exhausting me. Shampooing, conditioning, blow drying, and straightening were taking valuable time I didn't have. A good three inches were dead as a doornail. And finally, as much as I would like to have beautiful, perfect, long flowing hair à la Rapunzel or Gwyneth Paltrow (circa last year), my hair is REALLY thin and very, very fine, which means that, for me, long hair = stringy grossness.
So with the decision to GET RID OF ALL THE HAIR firmly in my mind, all I had to do was find a salon. I had gone to a SUPER expensive place last year where the woman who did my hair also waxed my eyebrows, and told me not to worry, that she would be sure to wax my forearms for me before I got married. To which I replied a) VETO, and b) my wedding dress is long sleeved, so VETO again. After paying an arm and a leg and possibly signing a promissory note involving my firstborn child, I left that salon and decided never to go back, both because a) I have no money and, b) my arms are too scared.
This fall I went to a place that was much cheaper. MUCH CHEAPER. I'm pretty sure (and by pretty sure I mean positive) that it hasn't been redecorated since 1982, and there's a strong possibility that some of the women who work there still think it is 1982, based on the haircuts I saw them produce during my short visit. So because I would rather NOT look like Demi Moore circa St. Elmo's Fire, I decided that cheap or not, I was never going back.
So after eliminating those two possibilities, and being far too lazy to look around for anywhere new, I decided to wait for something to fall into my lap (clearly the best strategy). And behold. A couple of weeks ago a friend mentioned a place near me that had done a good job on a girl with hair the same texture as mine (got that?). Based on proximity, price, and her recommendation, I immediately decided that that sounded PERFECT and magical. Also: rainbows.
So I headed out to The Shear Touch (look how clever) on Saturday, and while I was initially put off by the early 90's decor and the fact that every stylist in the room must live in a perpetual cloud of hairspray to maintain their bouffants, the woman who did my hair ended up being perfectly lovely and doing a really nice job. She was really careful to ask and do exactly what I wanted, but also made some good suggestions. I left with a slightly different cut than I had originally planned, and while it now looks about ten times less pretty than when she did it on Saturday, overall I'm really enjoying it. Moreover, thanks to the fact that I now have to deal with six fewer inches of hair in the morning, I have time to drink another café au lait and read the news (and by read the news I mean check facebook) before I leave for the library. WHAT COULD BE BETTER?
I very much approve.
