This Week: The Good, The Bad, and The Awesome

So my weekly wrap-up is a day and a half late, because in honor of Spring Break (and by 'Spring Break' I mean 'Not-Spring Break,' given the amount of pages I need to write in the next week), I boycotted work yesterday, escaped from Bryn Mawr, and went to visit a friend who lives on the Jersey Shore. The trip was short, but perfectly restorative. I hadn't left Bryn Mawr in two months, and was beginning to feel suffocated. My friend Graelyn was the perfect host, and not only was the day unseasonably gorgeous, but also the sight of OPEN SPACES and WATER was positively divine.

All that is to say: I'm running a little behind schedule and slightly panicky at the thought of all of the things I didn't do this weekend, BUT it will all be ok. At any rate, I learned a valuable lesson on my car trip yesterday: it is not a good idea, when driving outside of Philadelphia at night, in what is possibly the worst designed traffic pattern EVER, to apply lotion to your hands blindly, because you will probably squeeze about six times the recommended amount, and your hands will then be SO SLIPPERY that you might as well have greased the steering wheel with a stick of butter or five. And then a panic attack will most likely ensue. I'm JUST SAYING. Also, if you are unabashedly belting out all the words to "Defying Gravity," and get stopped at a stoplight next to someone who sees you and starts laughing, the chances that you will got stopped next to that same person three lights later, while still unabashedly belting out all the words to "Defying Gravity"? SURPRISINGLY HIGH.

The Good

  • Ness' extended absence at the vet gave us a chance to bond with Callie in style--she got double the love, and I took her on a long walk around Haverford College on Friday, when she was in only child HEAVEN.
  • I had some other first year grad students over for dinner on Thursday, and because Ness wasn't here to run into the table and break everything, I used the silver, the crystal, and the fancy china. Meaning that we've used them a whopping three times since we've been married.
  • I have a paper topic for my short Satire paper (due next week) that I might be able to expand for my final seminar paper.
  • Instead of travelling this summer, Preston and I have decided to redecorate the bedroom! And by redecorate, I mean actually decorate for the first time, since right now it is definitely the junkiest of all our rooms. NOTHING matches. Which is beginning to make me twitch. But YAY decorating! I foresee many trips to thrift stores and Ikea.
The Bad
  • Ness has to wear a cone/lampshade so that she won't lick at her "I don't have a uterus anymore" stiches, and it is REALLY ANNOYING. Slash hilarious. But mostly annoying. She runs into everything, including us, has already tried to eat it twice, and looks so miserable that Preston has had to stop me from taking it off twice today (I promise I wouldn't actually take it off...but she does look REALLY sad).
  • I took Monday and Tuesday off from running because I was completely exhausted, and then suddenly just Monday and Tuesday turned into all week...and now I feel gross. But Penelope and I are picking up tomorrow morning.
  • Preston and I still haven't really seen each other this week, and the next two weeks don't look much better. But we're planning out dinners for the next two weeks tonight, and, come March 21st, we will be bonding like there's no tomorrow.
The Awesome
  • Even if Spring Break in graduate school is really Fake Spring Break, it still means that I don't have class this week, and THAT is awesomeness defined.
  • When I was looking for a Satire paper topic this week, I found myself doing exactly what I applied to graduate school to do: looking closely at a text, seeing it in a new way, and running with it.
  • Finally reorganized my photos, and have begun a massive upload that will hopefully be the last of its kind (i.e. I've cleared enough room on my computer that I'll be able to upload daily).
