In Which I Ramble

1. I have now finished TWO graduate school classes. Per usual, Latin went better than the Greek. Last week, before class started I was seriously thinking that, during my five years (knock on wood that I survive) in this program, I would do both Latin and Greek equally. Because then I would just be super well-rounded and awesome. And then I actually had Greek today and that idea is officially flushed down the toilet. Well, partially. We're reading Greek Comedy, which I don't love. I don't even really enjoy Latin comedy...and if I don't like it in Latin, chances are slim to negative eighty that I'll like it in Greek. I do, however, love Hellenistic poetry, especially when examined in the context of Latin poetry (intertextuality, etc).

P.S. As I write this love post to Classical poetry, Preston's in the den working on his Vergil class and I just realized: our kids are going to get beaten up on the playground. A lot.

2. My goal for this year (my very lofty, probably unattainable goal) is to do all of my school work at the library--that is, not to bring ANYTHING home to work on. Because, let's be honest, it's rare that I get anything done at home. There are too many distractions like Preston, Callie, beer, facebook, TV, my bed, anything other than homework, etc. Plus, I'd prefer to separate my work/academic life and my home life. I'd like to leave everything behind for the day when I step out of the library doors so that I can come home and be really present here with Preston, Callie, and Ness/ do things like sit at my computer and read about a thousand articles on Entertainment Weekly re: The Hills (I'm totally Team Lo), Project Runway (Stella's gone woot!! sorry. still celebrating), America's Next Top Model (even though Tyra is sooo not my favorite person and the girls are now younger AND skinnier AND taller (duh) than I am, I continue to watch...why, MF, why?), etc. I may or may not have spent the better part of the afternoon reading said articles.

3. I have a running buddy! And MAN had I forgotten how much easier it is to run with a friend. Penelope just started in the graduate program at BMC as well (Penelope is the sister of my best friend from high school, Mary....read about them here) and while she is a way cooler and faster and more sophisticated runner than I am (She denies this. I don't believe her), we are both running the half marathon in a couple of weeks and plan on running a few more half marathons before the academic year is out. We ran together for the first time tonight, and while my run wasn't grreeeat, we made fantastic time, and it was just great to be running with another human being. Even though for most of the run I felt like I was about to vomit up my kidneys/small intestine/liver. And I realize that the gods might strike me down for making this next statement and that I will be eating crow all winter long, but it was so blazingly hot on our run today (at 7 pm) that I just have to: cold weather, I'm kind of wishing you were here...

4. Why is it already September? Egads. The summers continue to evaporate faster and faster every year.

5. I'm pretty sure I'm going to have about 60 pages worth of papers due the second week in December (but I won't know for sure till Monday). This thought is truly vomitous.

6. Preston and I have a hot date tomorrow night. We're going to Target AND BJ's Warehouse. That's right. You know you want to trade lives with us.

7. Callie's asleep next to me as I sit typing in the dining room (she's in the other wing chair...because sleeping on her DOG BED would just be so plebeian of her) and it's hard to believe we've had her for almost a year. It seriously makes me scared to think about what life would be like (for us and for her) if BARK hadn't found her for us last October. When I was running with Penelope tonight we were talking about adopting dogs and I told her, with complete sincerity, that getting Callie was one of the best decisions I have ever made, second only to my decision to marry Preston. And I meant it.

8. For dinner tonight I had delicious beer. Tasty and nutritious. This is when I like being an adult

9. I'm exhaustified. Sleep tight, y'all.

My hypothetical kids will be their friends! They can take turns getting beat up.

I actually kinda do because I MISS TARGET! Britain (or at least Oxford) is sorely lacking in big shiny monuments to consumerism.

    Glad things are going well!

  2. haha, quirky, i'll take you up on the surfing! and kelly, i can't wait to meet your hypothetical kids! also, your lack of target is tragic. although, if there weren't a target near us, i would probably have a lot more money (and a lot less shoes).
